Abstract

The work presents the life and work of Professor P.A. Herzen. It is noted that he was an outstanding “master” of Soviet and world medicine, one of the founders of domestic oncology and cardiovascular surgery, who enriched Soviet healthcare with a number of new ideas and surgical techniques of a high theoretical and practical level. The scientist’s life path was complex, multifaceted, interesting, and his services to Russian medicine were enormous. The vibrant life of Pyotr Alexandrovich occurred in the first half of the 20th century — an era of change and two world wars. Following the will of his great grandfather, P.A. Herzen decided to return to his homeland. In 1897 he came to Russia. When trying to start working in his specialty in his historical homeland, he encountered enormous difficulties. Without a diploma from a Russian university, without truly knowing the Russian language and without a Russian passport, P.A. Herzen turned to Professor V.F. for advice. Luginin, an old friend of his family. V.F. Luginin P.A. Herzen was helped to overcome all obstacles and in 1898 P.A. Herzen graduated from Moscow University. From 1898 to 1920 P.A. Herzen worked at the Old and New Catherine Hospital. Here he worked his way up from resident to professor. Describing the creative path of P.A. Herzen, we tried to imagine the complex interaction of factors that determined such a remarkable result — Pyotr Alexandrovich’s significant contribution to world medical science.
